Artistic Merit

From Tractatus

Artistic Merit is that quality of a film (or any other piece of Art) which causes it to transcend the bounds of its own technical worthiness. A very bad film with artistic merit suddenly becomes watchable. A good one becomes timeless. A pornographic one suddenly appears in every Blockbuster nationwide.

Naturally, I refer to the appreciation of the camera lens (paint brush,theater...) for the human form. Is it not the case that we are willing to overlook some tiny flaw -- complete lack of discernable plot -- if presented with a healthy dose of Artistic Merit on the side?

So, for the record, I propose Iain's Top Five list of films with Artistic Merit:

  1. Stealing BeautyImdb.png
  2. Sex and LuciaImdb.png
  3. Henry & JuneImdb.png
  4. Belle EpoqueImdb.png
  5. In the Realm of the SensesImdb.png

Since all of these are worth watching even without the Artistic Merit I also provide the following list:

  1. Flesh GordonImdb.png
  2. Cruel IntentionsImdb.png
  3. The Human TornadoImdb.png
  4. BarbarellaImdb.png

...

In case you were interested in films which have dangerously misleading levels of Artistic Merit:

  1. The PianoImdb.png
  2. Requiem for a DreamImdb.png
  3. Original SinImdb.png
  4. ShowgirlsImdb.png
  5. Eyes Wide ShutImdb.png

...
