How many pages will it take for our heros to figure out what we know at the beginning. 100? 200? 300? Infuriating, and much less engaging than her other work.
There is a fascinating moment in Chapter XXIV where Austen drops into the first person, and claims to be fallible with respect to Fanny's character. It is rather abrupt to find that 'I' standing at the beginning of a sentance. I find it fascinating... it cannot be an accident... so I feel it must say a great deal about the author, and her knowledge of her own character.
