Walkthrough
Character creation
Small arms, Repair, and Science are the key skills. You need Repair of 30 to fix the Steam pipe leaks in Megaton. Science and Lockpick need to be increased to 50/75/100 quickly so that you can unlock terminals and doors. Small Arms keeps you alive. Repair allows you to carry more valuable loot, becaus as you get overloaded you repair the armor to free up more weight. This means that you make more money... which helps you not care much about ammo expenditures.
Stats should never be made more than 8 to start with (more on this later), because stats will be increased during the game, and there are many items which increase, and decrease your stats.
Exiting the vault
Personally, I like beating the first guard you meet to pick up better armor. I save Butch's mother, to get the Tunnel Snakes Jacket (I use a baseball bat during most of the exit). I shoot Amanta's father, and the guard to collect more ammo, and another 10mm. make sure to take the Baseball cap. It increases your Perception. Be sure to pick up the Medicine Bobblehead in your Father's study.
Leveling up
The first level up I make sure that my repair is 30. Take Intense Training, and increase Percetion/Luck/... but not above 8.
Manuals
Don't read them until you are L4, and have the Comprehension perk, then read them all immediately.
Megaton
Go straight to megaton. Picking up the frag grenades and Pugilism Book on the way. Walk around back, and get the Sniper rifle from the hollowed out rock.
Talk to the sheriff, and accept the Atomic quest. Talk to Karl, and accept the Steam Pip quest, Talk to Moira, and Accept the radiation quest. Stand next to the bomb for awhile and irradiate yourself (600 rads). Talk to Moira again. Accept the Food/Medicine quest. Fix all the steam pipes. Talk to Karl. Talk to Mr. ___. Get the Fusion Pulse Charge. Take it to the sheriff. Wait for the sheriff to be shot, and shot Mr ___ in the back of the head. Take all their stuff, and then go fix the atomic bomb. The Sherrif's son will now give you the deed to your Megaton house. You can now walk into the Sherrifs unlocked house and retrieve the Strength Bobblehead. Go to moriarty's and accept Lucy West's Arefu quest.
Super Duper Mart
On the way, pick up the Special-Ops manual NW of the Super-Dooper Mart. Go in the right door, jump into the office area. Collect the laser Pistols, food, and ammo. By hiding, and taking careful shots, you can work your way around the outside of the room without much risk. The sniper rifle comes in handy here. Pick up the key to the storage room. Attempt to unlock the storage room with the computer. No big deal if you fail, just use key. Activate the Protectron. Pick up the NukaCola Quantums and the medicine.
The protectron will go outside and start a fight. While the raiders are shooting at the Protectron, kill them. Now collect all the stuff including the 10 energy cells from the Protectron. Don't forget the Jerky Vendor's Tales. Go back to Moira. Accept the Minefield quest.
Continue East, go south past Wilhelm's Wharf and enter the Flooded Metro. Continue through to Arlington Cemetery, go to Arlington House and pick up the Agility Bobblehead.
Get Bobbleheads
Now we start to collect bobbleheads in earnest. The first one is the Lockpick Bobblehead in the Bethesda Ruins. We are going to get it on our way to Paradise Falls, where we can obtain the speech Bobblhead. Why are we going there? Because we need to get the mesmerizer... which we are going to use on Arkansas. This is a good idea because the other two potential slaves cause us a lot more grief. Get the Educated perk as son as you can. 3 skill points per level is a lot.
Arlington Cemetery
First stop is the Luck bobblehead. It can be found at Arlington House. To get there go to the Flooded Metro SSW of Wilhelm's Wharf. Be prepared from some Ghouls. When you get to the cemetery, there will be a group of Raiders to deal with. Go to Arlington House, get the stuff, and then go back to the Metro station. Continue in the Metro through the Arlington tunnels, which will take you under the river, and into the main Metro network. The goal is to get to Metro Central, and then go south to Rivet City.
Rivet City
Don't talk to anyone, that will just complicate your ability to do other quests. Instead go the the Lab, and get the Intelligence Bobblehead. It's important to get this one this early so that the maximum number of skill points available can be earned.
Bethesda
It is important to have an Explosives skill of 45 so that the numerous traps in this area can be disarmed for grenades(35) and shotguns(45) instead of killing you. You only need Lockpick of 40 because the Lockpick bobblehead you get here will enable you to get to 50.
The best way in is from the North, at night. Use the sniper rifle to shoot the sniper, and jump into the building. Climb to the third level, and snipe the other Raider in the building. Now, you have a terrific position to shoot the Raiders one at a time.
I like going in the East building and working my way around. Be very careful when crossing the bridge between the buildings, as the entrance to the West building can sometimes plunge you into immediate combat.
You _can_ get the grenade cluster. Just fall onto a filing cabinet.
Once you're done, head West to Agatha's. She'll give you some ammo, and you can start her quest. There will often be a caravan here, so it is a nice place to fast travel to. Head West from Agatha's to the Moresti trainyard. You'll need this location later for the Arefu quest. Head WNW to Paradise falls. Watch for super mutants.
Paradise Falls
Accept the slaver quest. We're going to satisfy it using Arkansas. So Fast travel back to Agatha's and head to Minefield.
Minefield
Best at night. Work your way through the fallen buildings to the playground, picking up mines as you go. A 10mm pistol works great to clear mines, but you want to stay hidden on the way in.
Run to the base of Arkansas's sniper post. Work your way up, and hit him with the Mesmetron. Take all his stuff, and send him back to paradise falls. Clear the rest of the town. Lot's of books! Remember the model of the house which is locked hard(100). We'll come back for that later.
Greener Pastures
head NE to the Greener Pastures Disposal site. Agility Bobblehead.
Republic of Dave
Now head NW to the Republic of Dave. Get the Perception Bobblehead from the Museum.
Speech Bobblehead
Fast Travel back to Paradise Falls. Go to Eulogy's ad and get the Speech bobblehead. I cleared the Run for it Quest at this point by killing all the slavers[shrug].
Arefu
Go south to Arefu, start Blood Ties. Pick the lock of Evan King's door and get the Repair Bobblehead. Fast Travel to the Moresti Trainyard, and complete the quest. Return to Megaton.
Chapter Two
At Megaton, talk to Moira, and start the second chapter. I recommend starting with the Mirelurks. Fast Travel to Wilhelms Wharf, run in the south entrance, take a right, put the monitor in the first egg clutch you see. Run out. Piece of cake. Return to Megaton. The Mole Rat's are pretty easy as well, and you get some nice loot from Rocksalt. The physical damage quest is easiest of all because it is just a matter of time before something hurts a lot. If you need to cripple a limb, use a grenade.
NorthWest Passage
The West, and NorthWest Corner contian a lot of things we want.
Oasis
Oasis -- Yew's Charm (+10 Speech), Barksin (+5 damage resistance)
Yew's Charm
Make sure to PASS Yew's speech challenge before going into the Caves, when you come back after killing Harold, she'll give you the charm.
Barkskin
Kill Harold, get the Barkskin (+5DR).
