Swing Dancing/Jockey Step

From Tractatus

< Swing Dancing

The Jockey is the heart and soul of swing dancing. It is often used to start dancing, and that is because it establishes a strong connection between the leader the follower, and the music.

To do a basic Jockey, you change weight every two beats. The important thing is that you change weight together, and you do it in w away which connects with the music. If the music is bouncy then bounce, if smooth, then step smoothly.

A really nice thing to do is to accentuate the bounce on every beat of the music by using a kick-step to change weight, not a step. Sweet!

Starting the dance

The first thing you do: don't do anything. Take a moment and listen to the music. Take the followers hand and bring her gently into closed position. Take a look around. Is this a good spot to dance in? Start to move a little. Rock back and forth. Maybe take a hooking rock step. The best time to start is _with_ your partner. When you find a good time to start, instead of doing a hooking rock step do a forward rock step, and send your partner in the direction you are looking. If you see someone standing there, you still have time to change her direction.

Super Jockey

To really dig into a jockey you have to make it bigger. Shift your weight forward(2beats), kick-tap back(2 beats), kick-tap back again(2 beats)... rock step(2 beats). Pow! an eight count jockey. Huge feel.
