Talk:Food:Americano

From Tractatus

An americano is normal espresso diluted with hot water (which is not passed through the grounds). So named, presumably, because American coffee is weak and watery. However, this drink is similar to, yet quite unlike American coffee. It's not quite as pleasing as an espresso, but lasts a long time. If you're a caffeine hound, I guess a Food:Red Eye is probably more your cup of tea.

The drink you describe, a several-ounce pull of espresso that takes a long time, is sometimes called a espresso lungo . It is usually bitter and (wait for it) overextracted. It is reminiscent of caffe crema, which is a several-ounce pull (several ounces) through a reduced amount of grounds in the usual time (25-30s), except that caffe crema usually tastes good.

(N.b., these names are not particularly canonical; others can and do use different terminology, including calling the nasty drink an americano. I tend to follow alt.coffee usage.) -Nkrish
